About Me

Daniela Heil (PhD) is a social and medical anthropologist, Senior Lecturer in the discipline of Sociology and Anthropology, and Deputy Head of School, Teaching and Learning in the School of Humanities and Social Science (HASS, December 2015-December 2017) at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Since 1997, Daniela’s research, fieldwork, and consultancy work have been in Indigenous Australia, in central-Western New South Wales, the Kimberley in Western Australia and the Torres Straits, in Native Title, and for the Australian Government in the (at the time) Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing in Canberra (ACT). Since 2006, another research interest for Daniela has been in assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) and the social science related working with German parents who, in collaboration with agencies and surrogacy services in the Ukraine where these services are considered legal, are fulfilling their personal desires of their own biological children.
