Sophie Roelants

Dr. Assistant in Industrial Biotechnology and Microbiology at Ghent University

About Me

"Dr. ir. Sophie Roelants has been active in the field of microbial biosurfactants for over 10 years. Together with the biosurfactant team at (University of Ghent) she transformed the biosurfactant producing yeast Starmerella bombicola into a platform organism for the production of new types of biosurfactants by applying genetic engineering. Today, synthetic biology is applied by the Sophie and the InBio team to further advance the use of this yeast in the bioeconomy. After obtaining her PhD, Sophie also started working at the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant to develop sustainable and efficient production processes for these new biosurfactants and the evaluation of the application potential thereof. Sophie is (co-)author of over 30 research papers/book chapters and 5 patent applications on these subjects. She is and was involved in (the coordination of) several (inter)national projects in this field."
