About the program

  • ABA-accredited program: The School of Law was one of the first in the nation to earn a variance approval from the American Bar Association.
  • Online-hybrid format: Learners in the program engage in on-campus and online learning opportunities, and keep working from anywhere, full time.
  • Open to transfer learners: Learners who have successfully completed their first year of law school with an ABA-accredited institution are eligible to transfer their credits.

90-Credit curriculum

The University of Dayton School of Law designed the 90-credit curriculum to be completed in less than four years (44 months). Learners study a rich offering of legal areas, from family law to trial practice, and engage in a wide range of topics relevant to their future careers as practicing attorneys.

Admissions

Prospective learners interested in this program must hold a bachelor’s degree or its recognized equivalent from a regionally accredited institution. While standardized test scores are required to apply, the admissions team reviews each application holistically. To complete an application, you will need to submit:

  • Standardized test scores (GRE or LSAT accepted)

  • Official undergraduate transcripts

  • Letters of recommendation

  • Character and fitness disclosures

  • Personal statement


Intensives: Get Relevant Experience and Applied Learning (REAL)

During their four-year academic experience, learners are required to attend multiple on-campus learning opportunities. There, learners connect with the University of Dayton School of Law community and delve deeper into their passion for law. Review a sample Get REAL Intensive schedule here.

Law Externship 

Apply what you’ve learned throughout the program in a real-world legal setting, such as a government agency, law firm, corporation, court, or legal aid office. The law externship takes place during your final semester, where you’ll work on-site in a legal setting for a minimum of 192 hours over the course of at least 10 weeks. As a legal extern, you will:

  • Gain substantial hands-on experience that reflects legitimate practice.

  • Explore your legal passions and decide which types of law you want to pursue.

  • Work closely with experienced practitioners or judges who will enhance your legal expertise.

Frequently asked questions

The content of the courses taught in the Online Hybrid J.D. Program is the same as the content of the on-campus J.D. courses. For example, learners in the online hybrid and on-campus Torts courses will be expected to master the same legal doctrines and skills. The difference is in how that content is delivered. As an online-hybrid learner, you will participate in live weekly online classes and discussions, complete interactive coursework, and attend two to three on-campus experiences a year.

Through the online hybrid structure, you benefit from a combination of online and in-person learning. You will have the opportunity to complete coursework on your own time and earn a J.D. degree from anywhere in the world while maintaining your full-time job.

The J.D. program is specifically designed for learners like you who are busy and who hold full-time jobs. However, you will have to take off work for the on-campus experiences (Get REAL Intensive weekends) and should plan accordingly. The American Bar Association recognized the program through a variance approval for an online-hybrid modality in May 2018.

Most states require aspiring attorneys to graduate from an ABA-approved J.D. program before they can take the bar exam and become licensed. Eligibility standards, including those relating to online programs, vary by jurisdiction and are subject to change. In addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness, and other qualifications required for admission to the bar in every U.S. jurisdiction. Applicants are advised to determine the requirements for any jurisdiction in which they intend to seek admission by contacting the jurisdiction. Addresses for all relevant agencies are available through the National Conference of Bar Examiners.

You and your classmates will meet face-to-face during online classes, where you will engage in discussions about that week’s coursework. The program’s online tools make it easy to collaborate with other learners on group projects, or to socialize and network. You will also meet your classmates in person during each Get REAL Intensive weekend.

No. You will earn the same Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree as learners in the on-campus program.

We offer support from the time you request information until after graduation. You will have a dedicated admissions counselor throughout the application process, and will be assigned an adviser when you become an enrolled learner. Your adviser is available to provide assistance with onboarding and tech help and answer any questions you may have. The career services team is also available to help you prepare for your career after graduation.

Throughout your time in law school, the staff of Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, Office of the Registrar, Office of Student Affairs, Office of Academic Affairs, Career Services Office, and Law Library will be here to assist you. Through the Academic Success Program, you will be able to build the necessary skills to succeed in law school and on the bar examination.

Yes. The School of Law commencement ceremony is held on the University of Dayton campus every spring, with a reception for family and friends immediately after. You are encouraged to join in this special celebration with your law school family.
