Lo que aprenderás
- How to align DNA/RNA and protein sequences and the theory behind the algorithms that make them possible
- The effects of mutations on cellular processes and the structure of proteins
- How to generate model structure of proteins
- Basic R programming to analyze biological data
- How to apply packages in the R environment to typical problems in bioinformatics
Modern biology generates massive quantities of big data. Hidden in this data might be the next blockbuster cancer therapy, the definitive proof that a certain gene is responsible for a disease, or the information needed to replicate a crucial biological process — and you could be on the team that discovers it.
Bioinformatics blends biology, computer science and mathematics and in this Bioinformatics MicroMasters program you’ll gain the cutting edge knowledge and experience that will give you significant career advantage in this fascinating field.
In this program, you will learn how to analyze DNA sequences to find mutations and anomalies, understand the important role protein structure plays in protein function and use statistical analysis tools, including R programming, to mine biological big data.
This program is ideal for those who want to learn more about the bioinformatics field and its effects on society at large or who would like to incorporate bioinformatics principles and tools into their laboratories.

What is a MicroMasters Program?
MicroMasters programs are a series of graduate level courses from top universities designed to advance your career. MicroMasters program certificates showcase deep learning and in-demand skills to employers and can help you get started on a path toward completing an advanced degree.
How to Earn a MicroMasters Program Certificate
To earn the program certificate, learners must complete and successfully earn a verified certificate in all three MicroMasters program courses with a grade of 80% or better.
From Program Certificate to a Master’s Degree
MicroMasters programs are designed to offer learners a pathway to an advanced degree and can count as credit toward completing a Master’s degree program. Learners who successfully earn this MicroMasters program certificate may apply for admission to a Master’s program, and if accepted, the MicroMasters program certificate will count towards the degree.
Through this program, you can combine your MicroMasters program certificate with additional online learning through UMGC to earn a Master of Biotechnology with a specialization in Bioinformatics degree. Learners who successfully earn verified certificates for all of the courses in this MicroMasters program are eligible to transition into the Master’s program in Biotechnology, with a specialization in Bioinformatics, at the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC). This program is fully online. Students will need to complete the application process to UMGC and meet all admission requirements for The Graduate School. For more information visit: https://www.umgc.edu/admissions/admission-requirements/graduate-admissions.cfm.
The Bioinformatics MicroMasters program certificate will count for 12 credits toward the full Master’s degree (36 credits are required for graduation with the MS in Biotechnology degree with a specialization in Bioinformatics).
- Bioinformatics Scientist is expected to grow rapidly in the next several years and have roughly 10,000 new job openings from 2014-2024 (O*Net Online).
- Medical Scientist is expected to grow at 8% from 2014-2024 resulting in 9,000 new jobs (BLS).
- Top industries are the government, private, scientific, and technical services sectors for careers in positions such as bioinformatician, bioinformatics analyst, bioinformatics software engineer, and bioinformatics scientist (O*net online).

The Bioinformatics MicroMasters program provides skills that would benefit anyone working in genomics and serves as the foundation for further study and advancement in bioinformatics and genomic data science.
No. The program content and course projects are sequential allowing the learner to build on subsequent work. Completing the listed prerequisite courses is essential in order to be successful in the course work.
Learners who successfully earn the MicroMasters program certificate are eligible to apply to the Master of Biotechnology with a specialization in Bioinformatics degree at UMGC. Learners who have earned a MicroMasters program certificate will be credited with 12 academic units (36 units are required for graduation with the Biotechnology with a specialization in Bioinformatics degree).
The Bioinformatics MicroMasters program is designed for individuals who want to learn about the information and meaning hidden in an organism's genome and proteome to apply in their research or communicate more fluently with bioinformaticians.
You will receive an individual verified certificate for each Bioinformatics MicroMasters program course that you pass as a verified student. Students passing all three Bioinformatics MicroMasters program courses on a verified track will receive a MicroMasters program certificate.
You will get credit for four classes: BIOT 640, BIOT 630, BIFS 614 and BIFS 619, which account for 12 credits (i.e. 33% of the program).
Yes. You need to be admitted to the Master’s program. The MicroMasters program certificate does not guarantee admission. You will need to complete the application process to UMGC and meet all entrance requirements for The Graduate School. Yes. If you are interested in the Bioinformatics MicroMasters program certificate, you must successfully pass and receive a verified certificate in each of the three Bioinformatics MicroMasters program courses (DNA Sequences: Alignments and Analysis; Proteins: Alignment, Analysis, and Structure; and Statistical Tools in Bioinformatics).
No. To earn the MicroMasters program certificate you need to successfully earn a verified certificate in all three MicroMasters program courses when they are scheduled. The courses are on an instructor-paced schedule rather than self-paced, so there is no way to reduce the time to complete them.
Students must achieve a grade of 80% or higher for a passing grade in each of the courses in the MicroMasters program.
Unfortunately, learners from Iran and Cuba will not be able to register for this course. While edX has received a licenses from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to offer courses to learners from these countries, our licenses do not cover this course. EdX truly regrets that US sanctions prevent us from offering all of our courses to everyone, no matter where they live.
