Anant Agarwal: President edX

Anant Agarwal


Anant Agarwal is the CEO of edX, an online learning destination founded by Harvard and MIT. Anant taught the first edX course on circuits and electronics from MIT, which drew 155,000 students from 162 countries. He has served as the director of CSAIL, MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. He is a successful serial entrepreneur, having co-founded several companies including Tilera Corporation, which created the Tile multicore processor, and Virtual Machine Works.

Anant won the Maurice Wilkes prize for computer architecture, and MIT's Smullin and Jamieson prizes for teaching. He holds a Guinness World Record for the largest microphone array, and is an author of the textbook "Foundations of Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits."

Scientific American selected his work on organic computing as one of 10 World- Changing Ideas in 2011, and he was named in Forbes' list of top 15 education innovators in 2012. Anant, a pioneer in computer architecture, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the ACM.

He hacks on WebSim, an online circuits laboratory, in his spare time. Anant holds a Ph.D. from Stanford and a bachelor's from IIT Madras. Anant's twitter handle is @agarwaledu.

Wendy Cebula: President, COO

Wendy Cebula is president and chief operating officer at edX, managing the nonprofit’s day-to-day operations and positioning it for accelerated growth. Wendy brings strong digital and business expertise and has successfully grown and run large online businesses. She is best known for her 13-year tenure at Vistaprint, a leading online provider of professional marketing products and services to micro businesses and the home, where she recently served as chief operating officer and helped grow and scale the company from $1 million to over $1 billion in revenue globally. Wendy is a member of the Board of Directors for ResearchNow and also serves on the Board of Directors of the Commonwealth Institute, a nonprofit founded to help women-led businesses become and stay successful. Wendy received her bachelor’s degree in international finance from Rochester Institute of Technology. Outside of work you will most often find Wendy enjoying time with her family.

Rob Rubin: Vice President of Engineering and Educational Services

Rob Rubin has been building infrastructures of Internet companies since 1995. (He’s been collecting books on mathematical puzzles and baseball for even longer.) As Vice President of Engineering at Carbonite (IPO 2011), a leading provider of online backup and cloud-based applications, he was responsible for a massively scalable infrastructure, and hyper-productive, flourishing scrum teams. Rob has taught in the United States and Israel, and has co-developed patents for computer applications tools. At edX, Rob leads a team of engineers and developers who are responsible for building and providing the open platform technology behind edX, and for launching edX courseware. Rob holds a B.A. in Computing Science from Columbia University, a Sc.M. in Computer Science from Brown University, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brown University. He is an avid gardener and has a particular affection for Raleigh Twenty folding bikes, often seen riding his single-speed in and around town.

Piotr Mitros: Chief Scientist

As Chief Scientist at edX Piotr Mitros is charged with developing and applying technology to optimize the learning process. His teaching experience around the world has given him a unique perspective on education. As a graduate student, Piotr took breaks from his thesis to spend time teaching in China, working in India, and facilitating educational technology projects in Nigeria. His observations of university systems in the developing world inspired Piotr to find ways to leverage peer teaching and distance learning to dramatically increase access to education. Following a stint in industry as an analog designer, most recently at start-up Rhythmia Medical where he designed the analog front end for a novel medical imaging modality, Piotr returned to MIT to help lead the creation of the original MITx platform. He brings a broad interdisciplinary background that combines teaching, engineering, computer science, and math, and has been interested in teaching and education since he was a child. Piotr enjoys making things -- curtains, bicycle parts, electronics, furniture, and speakers. Piotr holds a B.S. in Math and Electrical Engineering, a Masters of Engineering in EECS, and a Ph.D. in EECS, all from MIT.

Matthew Malloy: Vice President of Marketing Operations

Matthew Malloy is a seasoned business executive with over 20 years of early stage consumer marketing and operations experience. Most recently, he was the Vice President of Marketing and Sales, and VP of Emerging Markets at Zipcar Inc., where he was responsible for building the unique urban brand, crafting the go-to-market strategies, and identifying and launching most of Zipcar’s highly successful markets throughout North America and abroad. Matt, an expert in millennial marketing and collaborative consumption, currently advises numerous east and west coast companies and sits on the board of a Boston-based not-for-profit. Matt received a BA in Business, Marketing, from UMASS Amherst.

Jim Sheehan: Chief Financial Officer

As CFO, Jim Sheehan oversees the fiscal management of edX. He brings more than 25 years of financial and operations management experience in software, services and manufacturing. Jim was most recently the Senior Vice-President and CFO of Ember Corporation which was sold to Silicon Laboratories in July 2012. In his role at Ember, Jim was responsible for all aspects of finance, human resources, legal and IT services. He has extensive operational experience in scaling organizations, and has also held senior finance positions at Demantra (acquired by Oracle), Neteos, BISYS Networking Services, Network Integrity, EMC and Epoch Systems. Jim holds a BBA in Accounting from St. Bonaventure University.

Tena Herlihy: Vice President and General Counsel

As General Counsel for edX, Tena is responsible for the legal affairs of edX, providing timely and practical advice in the fast-growing and uncharted field of MOOCs. In addition to handling intellectual property matters, contract negotiations, regulatory issues and general corporate matters, Tena has provided counsel on business operations since the inception of edX in 2012. Prior to joining edX, Tena was a lawyer in MIT’s Office of the General Counsel, where she quickly adopted MIT’s mission of improving the world through higher education. Tena also draws from broad legal experience working both in private practice and as in-house counsel to navigate the emerging legal challenges created as edX aims to educate a billion people. Tena is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and Boston College Law School. She is a mother to two daughters who have graduated from college and a 10-year-old son. She expects her son will have a very different college experience than her daughters did, as MOOCs will raise the quality of and style of education both online and in the classroom.

Kathy Pugh: Vice President of Education Services

As Vice President of Education Services at edX, Kathy directs and oversees the management of the course development teams and is responsible for university relations with edX consortium members. She brings extensive experience as a top executive in the software and financial services industries. Most recently in charge of global services at Courion Corporation, Kathy has a nationally recognized track record of success in expanding and streamlining businesses. She has worked in long-established businesses as well as start-ups, and brings her valued business acumen and organizational talents to edX. When she is not at edX, Kathy enjoys tennis, swimming, rowing, cycling, and watching her son play hockey. She holds a B.A. in Economics from the College of the Holy Cross.

Johannes Heinlein: Senior Director of University Partnerships

Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships

Johannes Heinlein is Senior Director of Stategic Partnerships for edX, leading university partnership and collaboration initiatives. In this role, Johannes works directly with the edX president and board on identifying and executing strategy. Prior to joining edX, Johannes served as Director in the Office of the President and Provost of Harvard University where he was responsible for the planning and execution of university-wide transformations in strategy and operations. Prior to joining Harvard, Johannes worked in the public sector and for global industry leaders, to develop and implement change management and program strategies. He has lived and worked in Europe, Asia and North America. Johannes holds degrees from the University of Hamburg, Germany, the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. Johannes is married with two children and calls Boston his home.
