Learn climate change

Changes in the earth’s climate happen because of natural phenomena like oceanic variations and planetary tilt, as well as human contributions like deforestation and carbon emissions. Learn about climate change with online courses delivered through edX.

What is climate change?

Wherever you live, you may find the seasons to be generally predictable, with light fluctuations year-to-year. Climate change refers to extended periods of change in normal weather patterns experienced around the globe. While many of these changes are naturally occurring, human activities also contribute to climate change in unique ways.

Between the earth and outer space is the ozone layer, which traps heat and gas within our atmosphere. Those elements can cause changes in temperature, rain patterns, and weather events such as hurricanes or tsunamis. Because climate change is in part a natural process, human intervention can’t stop it entirely. However, humans can study their impact on the natural world and learn how to mitigate actions that may accelerate climate change.

Climate change courses and curriculum

Climate change specialists don’t just observe the changes in our environment; they catalog and make sense of those changes by looking at a larger picture. They work to determine how change occurred and whether changes can be slowed down or prevented. Their findings are then communicated to oversight agencies, as well as the general public.

In order to do this, it’s important to understand many of the natural sciences. Introductory courses can cover principles of atmospheric science, carbon emissions, greenhouse gasses, sea level rise, and climate models. Other courses may offer specialized instruction on topics such as disaster and climate resilience, climate change communication, tools for a low carbon economy, and the global water crisis. The climate is a product of a number of natural and human processes, so being able to observe from both a micro and macro level is crucial to success in the field.
