What is NativeScript?

NativeScript is an open-source mobile app development framework that helps developers more effectively create native applications for tablets, smartphones, and smartwatches for the Apple iOS and Android operating systems. NativeScript is especially useful in today’s business landscape, since so many modern companies, like social media platforms, online stores, and rideshare services depend on mobile apps to provide value to users.

Unlike JavaScript and TypeScript, NativeScript isn’t actually a programming language. Rather, it’s an accompanying codebase that provides easier access to low-level, often complicated iOS and Android application programming interface (API) code. For this reason, NativeScript can embed with many existing web development programming languages, platforms, and frameworks, including: JavaScript, TypeScript, Angular, Vue, React, Svelte, Capacitor, and Ionic.Footnote 1

NativeScript course curriculum

NativeScript is open source, so you can find the code that makes up its most recent release on the official NativeScript GitHub page. To make the most of NativeScript, you may benefit from a NativeScript tutorial or course that covers topics like:

  • App development: Before you can use NativeScript to create a mobile app, you’ll need to learn the fundamentals of app development, from the overall process to the basic components that make apps work.

  • Web development: Many mobile applications built with NativeScript require an internet connection, so knowledge of web development methods and technologies, like JavaScript, PHP, and HTML, is helpful.

  • NativeScript Core: As the name implies, NativeScript Core provides the main functionality needed to build native mobile apps.Footnote 2

  • NativeScript with Angular: By learning Angular, you can build NativeScript apps that make use of Angular technologies like its user interface (UI) framework.Footnote 3

  • NativeScript with Vue: With Vue knowledge, you can build NativeScript apps that take advantage of Vue, a front-end JavaScript framework that’s great for building user interfaces and single-page apps.Footnote 4

edX offers a variety of classes to help new and experienced web developers learn valuable skills. From specialized boot camps to full programs that allow you to earn a bachelor's degree or pursue a master’s degree, there are many different learning opportunities that can align with your personal interests and professional aspirations.

NativeScript development jobs

Now that you know what NativeScript is, you can begin exploring compelling jobs that use it. Jobs where you can apply NativeScript knowledge include:

  • Software engineer: If you can understand and use NativeScript, you may already have core software engineering knowledge and can use your skills to write many different program types.

  • Web developer: Web developers use NativeScript to build mobile apps.

  • UI developer: UI developers can use the NativeScript UI plugin to craft sharp UIs and visual applications.

  • Full stack developer: Full stack developers use JavaScript as part of their web app development workflows. Since NativeScript is written in JavaScript, NativeScript developers will feel right at home in this role.

Note that learning NativeScript alone does not mean you have the skills required for the jobs listed above. Some employers may seek out candidates with specific educational credentials, like a bachelor’s degree in computer science, while others may want proof of skills that can be acquired with specialized training in a coding boot camp, for example. edX offers a variety of educational pathways for learners interested in advancing their knowledge in a variety of subjects. Find the right course for you.

How to use NativeScript as a web developer

As a web developer, you can use NativeScript to accomplish many different tasks. This includes:

  • Programming: Though NativeScript is easy to learn, it’s still a specialization of other development technologies. If you can’t program, you might have a tough time acclimating to NativeScript.

  • UI design: NativeScript can be used to make UIs for mobile applications. But to make compelling UIs, you’ll first need to understand key UI design concepts.

  • Web development: Web development is distinct from other kinds of programming forms, so you’ll want to learn all about it to start making rich web-connected mobile apps with NativeScript.
