Bilingual Extension Track

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) requires and grants the Bilingual Extension to the Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD-BE) certification. The CSD program provides students with a path to obtain the TSSLD-BE certificate through the Bilingual Extension Track (BET). Learners who intend to work in the state of New York should pursue their BET; other states have similar bilingual speech-language pathologists (SLPs) requirements, but the Speech@NYU curriculum is only recognized for New York State. This track covers social justice, equity, and multilingualism per the NYSED; studies take place throughout core courses that are required of all students, as well as a required BET course. The required BET course is also available to non-BET students as an elective. Learners will complete at least 50 direct clinical hours, which count as part of the 400 direct clinical hours required for the degree.

  • The BET is for learners who:
    • Can travel to NYC: Learners who pursue the BET complete at least 50 direct clinical contact hours in New York City for as many as five days a week.
    • Intend to work in the state of New York: This program is only for New York State bilingual speech-language pathologists.
    • Speak two or more languages: Bilingual or multilingual communicators benefit from the BET program. Note that signed communication codes such as American Sign Language are not part of the NYS certification pathway.

    Learners interested in the BET track should express interest in this particular track on their application for admission into the CSD program.

NYU Steinhardt learners are aspiring speech-language pathologists interested in a holistic, comprehensive education, and are ready to take part in a rigorous program. They also demonstrate compassion as well as genuine, sincere interest in the welfare and success of those they work with. 

To complete an application, you will need to submit:

On-campus immersions

Integral to the learning experience at Speech@NYU are clinical immersions, practicum/field placement courses, and field placement experiences. A dedicated Placement Specialist is assigned to each learner to assist them with securing an internship for clinical experience. 

Prior to field placements, learners must attend two on-campus immersions in New York City, so as to prepare for working independently in clinical experiences and for conducting clinical diagnostics in speech pathology.

During the two on-campus immersions, learners participate in specialized workshops covering topics such as aphasia treatment, dysphagia screening, language screening, and instrumental assessment of voice disorders. Learners provide screens in hearing, language, cognitive, and swallowing to diverse NYC communities, and in turn receive on-the-spot feedback and dedicated supervision from clinical speech-language pathologists.
