What does a chemical engineer do?

Chemical engineers apply scientific, mathematical, and technological principles while designing and developing the processes that turn raw materials into products. With a bachelor's or a master's degree, you can work in offices and labs in various industries, including:

Chemical engineers can also provide consulting services in academia, law, and finance. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), chemical engineers earned an annual median salary of $112,100 in 2023.

Steps to become a chemical engineer

To become a chemical engineer, you must earn a bachelor's or master's degree. Students who wish to advance their careers can obtain certifications and licensure.

Step 1: Earn a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering

Many employers require chemical engineers to possess at least a bachelor's degree in the subject or a related field. Only consider accredited institutions. Aim to also choose a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Programmatic accreditation ensures that your course of study meets global standards for technical education and promotes employment opportunities. Institutional accreditation ensures you can qualify for student aid and transfer credits to other schools if necessary.

Step 2: Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam

Either just before or shortly after you earn your degree, you will sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) administers this six-hour test. You do not have to pass it to work as a chemical engineer, but doing so can validate your education and boost your résumé. You must also pass the exam to acquire a Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Step 3: Gain four years of professional experience

Through work experience, a chemical engineer can apply their theoretical knowledge in the real world. Professional experience also allows you to hone your problem-solving skills, which can be valuable for your career and transferable to any industry.

You need at least four years of professional experience under a licensed engineer's supervision to obtain your PE license.

Step 4: Acquire a PE license

Getting your PE license allows you to sign and submit plans to a public authority, oversee engineering work, and serve as an expert witness. A PE license can make your résumé more attractive and prepare you for leadership and consulting roles.

To become a licensed engineer, you must sit for NCEES's Principles and Practice of Engineering exam after you fulfill the other requirements.

Step 5: Consider a master's degree

Many management and C-suite positions require a master's degree in engineering. In a master's program, you can learn advanced concepts in areas like thermodynamics. You may also have the opportunity to participate in research.
