About Me

Indra leads the Journalism and Media Lab – JamLab – at Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct, Johannesburg which is Africa’s only journalism and media accelerator programme. He also runs the Network Society research project in the Journalism and Media Department at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg where he also teaches television and video journalism, media entrepreneurship and theories of new media. His research includes a study of mobile use amongst low-income South Africans, a quantitative study of Internet use in South Africa, a study of technology innovation in civil society organizations in South Africa and Kenya and a study of demand for government open data. Indra has presented at many conferences and presented papers in South Africa and at the Universities of Oxford, Harvard, and Lisbon. He has also published in a number of international journals including IDS Bulletin and info. He is a member of the World Internet Project, a global network of researchers on the Internet and Society covering over thirty countries, coordinated by the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California. Indra is a highly experienced journalist, television, and film producer and media entrepreneur who has worked across the world. He has produced television series and feature films in South Africa, the US, and the UK and was a senior producer of the BBC Newsnight and Panorama programmes. His work has been recognised with a Peabody Award, an Emmy nomination, and the Japan Prize.
