Martha Rosero-Peña

Social Inclusion Director (Afro Descendants Fellow) at Conservation International

About me

With over three decades of experience, Martha C. Rosero-Peña, an Afro-Colombian researcher from the University of Florida, completed a Ph.D. in Environmental Sociology with a specialization in race & ethnicity. Her collaborative work with Afro-descendants and Indigenous Peoples in critical conservation regions across the Amazon and Colombian Pacific highlights their invaluable contributions to biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation. Recently, her research conducted with the Moore Center for Science and the University of Florida, released in COP28, underscores the crucial need for Afro-descendant inclusion in global environmental decision-making. Martha also provides guidance to the IPBES and serves as a scientist member in the Science Panel for the Amazon. Holding degrees in Animal Science and Environmental Sciences, she has made significant contributions to initiatives in the Peruvian Amazon with the University of Florida and in the Colombian Amazon with organizations like WWF and Tropenbos Colombia. Currently, as a leader at Conservation International, Martha spearheads engagement with Afro communities in the Americas, focusing on natural climate solutions and biodiversity conservation.
