Martin Rauch

Lecturer at Lehm Ton Erde

About me

Martin Rauch, trained in ceramics and stove building in Stoob (1974), and studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna (1978–1983), graduating with distinction for his thesis "Lehm Ton Erde" , which explored earthen architecture.

From 1990 onward, he has been active in designing and realizing rammed earth projects internationally. In 1999, he founded Lehm Ton Erde Baukunst GmbH, followed by ERDEN in 2007, focusing on prefabricated rammed earth elements.

His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across Europe (1988–2010), and he has received numerous awards, including:

  • 2008 Fassa Bortolo International Prize for Sustainable Architecture (Italy)

  • 2008 Austrian Builders’ Award

  • 2011 Holcim Award for a school in Morocco

  • 2012 Red Dot Design Award (for ceramic tiles with KARAK)

He taught at the University of Art and Design Linz (2003–2010), led workshops globally (e.g., Bangladesh, South Africa, Austria with BASEhabitat), and since 2010 holds the title of Honorary Professor of the UNESCO Chair for Earthen Architecture. Since 2014, he has been a guest lecturer at ETH Zurich alongside Anna Heringer.
