Guest speaker, Professor at Qatar University
Professor Saif Shaheen Al-Murikhi received his PhD in Islamic economic history from the University of Manchester, U.K., in 1993. From 1993 to 2019, Professor Al-Murikhi taught many courses at Qatar University, ranging from Islamic Civilization, The Economic and Social History of the Islamic World, The Impact of Islamic Civilization on the World, Texts and Historical Documents, The History of the Arabian Islamic State, The Umayyads, and Historiography. Professor Al-Murikhi’s research interest focuses on the economic, social, and cultural history of the Gulf, including the history of Qatar in the medieval period. During his academic career, Professor Al-Murikhi published several books and multiple refereed articles on the different aspects of the economic and social history of the Gulf. He also received several scholarly grants from the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) and Qatar University. Among the awards funded by QNRF was a three-year project (2016–2019) entitled ’A Preliminary Syriac, Aramaic and Arabic Lexical and Toponymical Survey of Beth Qatraye’, which resulted in him co-authoring two books: Beth Qatraye A Lexical and Toponymical Survey and The Syriac and Arabic Lexicon of Hasan Bar Bahlul.
