Tobias Luthe

Lecturer at ETH Zurich

About me

Prof. Dr. Tobias Luthe, is an academic transdisciplinary design hybrid, with an interest in understanding theories, methods and philosophy of science both for the sake of deep conceptual discourse, and for helping to address real-world problems with the methods, cultures and practices both science and design have to offer. He was originally trained as a forest and environmental scientist, graduating with majors in environmental economics, wood technology and passive house design. He took a second master’s degree in education and communication on sustainability, and then did a PhD in social-ecological resilience of mountain systems to climate change.
He currently work as professor for sustainability science and regenerative design, affiliated with The Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Norway, and ETH Zurich. At ETH he is program director of “Designing Resilient Regenerative Systems”, as part of the Systemic Design Labs group he leads. Tobias is co-founding director of the MonViso Institute in the Italian Alps, a real-world mountain laboratory for sustainability transitions and regenerative design. He also co-founded Grown, a design-as-nature lab and experience collective, winning industry awards for bio composites.
