Bilingual Extension Track

The Bilingual Extension for Teachers Working with Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD-BE) certification is a necessary credential granted by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). This certification is a requirement for individuals who serve diverse bilingual or multilingual pediatric populations, ranging from 3 to 21 years of age, in various NYSED-funded settings, which encompass educational environments, private practices, and select medical establishments.

As a matriculating graduate student in Communicative Sciences and Disorders (CSD), our program offers a structured pathway for you to achieve the TSSLD-BE certification through our Bilingual Extension Track (BET). Our curriculum equips you with the essential knowledge and clinical experiences mandated by the State of New York (NYS).

It's important to note that the TSSLD-BE certificate is granted by the NYS, not by New York University or the CSD Department. While other states may have similar requirements for bilingual speech-language pathologists (SLPs), please be aware that the Speech@NYU program is specifically tailored to meet the certification requirements of the NYS.

  • Students should pursue the BET if they:

    • Can travel to NYC. Students who pursue the BET complete at least 50 direct clinical contact hours in New York City for as many as five days a week.

    • Intend to practice with pediatric populations. The program focuses on pediatric groups ages 3-21 years in NYSED-funded agencies and programs.

    • Self-identify as a bilingual or multilingual communicator. American Sign Language and other signed communication codes are not included in the NYS certification pathway.


    Students interested in the BET track should express interest in this particular track on their application for admission into the CSD program.

Clinical Practicum and Field Placement Sequence

Integral to the learning experience at Speech@NYU is the Clinical Practicum and Field Placement Sequence which consists of five semesters. The first two semesters include clinical immersions which allow students to engage in activities that promote opportunities to seamlessly bridge theoretical pedagogy to real-world clinical applications. The last three semesters include field placement experiences. All students will be placed in a school at some point during the five-part sequence and part-time status will transition to a full-time schedule.

Students are assigned a dedicated Placement Specialist, who will collaborate with the NYU Steinhardt Department of Communicative Disorders (CSD) Clinical Field Placement Team to find a field site that meets NYU Steinhardt’s high academic standards.
