Gaining Confidence To Pursue an Education in Computer Science

Nancy Learner Story.png

Nancy, a program mentor in Indiana, has always been interested in computers. By completing WGUx’s Information Technology Foundations course, part of the Introduction to Information Technology MicroBachelors® program, Nancy was better able to understand how data and information systems work together to drive success at an organization. Now, Nancy wants to continue her education in computer science.

How was your experience learning online?

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the fact that I could work on courses when I had the time. It also allowed me to create a personal goal for the completion of the course. However, there was a deadline that was published. Having that date listed motivated me to finish the course. The resources were very linear and easy to navigate. I could quickly tell how much of the course I had completed and what was left to finish.

How has your learning impacted your career, life, or community?

This course helped me have a better understanding of the inner workings of a computer. At my job, we are in the process of upgrading to a new computer system. I now understand the terminology better and I can better understand this project’s direction. In my personal life, I had an extremely old computer. After taking this course, I was better informed about the computer options available and purchased a computer that met my needs.

How do you plan to use your learning in the future? What’s next for you?

I have always been interested in computers. Since I completed this course, I feel more confident in taking courses in this area. I am interested in coding and cloud computing. I believe both of these skills are important to have in the current job market. I would like to continue in this area and now have the confidence to explore these options.

What advice would you give new edX students?

I would encourage them to carefully read the course information to see if the learning objectives meet their needs. I would also encourage them that if they are truly dedicated to completing this course to set aside some specific time each week for their schoolwork. It is easy to let time go by, but if you have carved the time out in your schedule, you will have a higher chance of success.

Anything else you'd like to share about your experience learning on edX?

I like how the courses are crafted so that they build on each other. I know which course I should take in this field if I wanted to continue my education.
