About this course

How do you protect the critical data that is increasingly being stored in the cloud? Learn how to build a security strategy that keeps data safe and mitigates risk.

In this course, part of the Cloud Computing MicroMasters program, you will be introduced to industry best practices for cloud security and learn how to architect and configure security-related features in a cloud platform. Case studies and government standard documents will be reviewed to help ensure appropriate levels of security are implemented.

You’ll develop the necessary skills to identify possible security issues in the cloud environment. You will also gain experience with tools and techniques that monitor the environment and help prevent security breaches such as monitoring logs and implementing appropriate security policies.

Earn up to $225 in AWS promotional credits! 

Students who enroll in this course are eligible for $25 in AWS promotional credit to cover the cost of the hands on labs. Students can claim this credit after completing some initial course work but before beginning the first AWS lab. Students also qualify for an additional $200 AWS promotional credit by purchasing a verified certificate and successfully completing the final project.

This course is part of the Cloud Computing MicroMaster’s program from UMUC. Upon completion of the program and receipt of the verified MicroMaster’s certificate, learners may then transition into the full UMUC Master’s Program in Cloud Computing Architecture. No, all students are eligible for the $50 promotional AWS credit in CC 617. If you purchase a Verified Certificate you will receive an additional $200 promotional AWS credit upon completion of your final project if you earn at least an 80% on that project. 

How do I receive my AWS promotional credit? 

Before beginning your first AWS lab you will find general lab instructions and a link to AWS Educate to request the AWS credit. If you cannot find the link within the instructions, please post in the course discussion forum and one of our teaching assistants will assist you. 

What is the AWS lab? 

In CC 617 there are several hands-on labs that are designed to help students understand some of the AWS services. For audit learners (those who do not purchase a Verified Certificate), these labs are optional but we encourage you to complete them. For verified learners (those who purchase a Verified Certificate of Achievement), the labs are a required piece of your final project (or part of the preparation for your final project).  

If I don’t finish the course do I get to keep the AWS promotional credit? 


How do I receive my $200 AWS promotional credit? 

Purchase a Verified Certificate in this course and earn at least 80% on the final project. Once you submit your final project, check back in the course 5 business days after the end of the course for the link to receive your $200 promotional AWS credit (instructor needs 5 days following course end to grade your work before the link will appear). 

To be eligible to receive the $200 promotional AWS credit, do I need to earn 80% or higher in the course or 80% or higher just on the final project?

Who can take this course?
