  1. QueensX's Water and Global Human Health MicroMasters® Program

  2. 12–15 hours per week, for 4 weeks

    This course covers the flow of water as it falls to the earth and travels towards rivers, lakes and oceans.

  3. 12–15 hours per week, for 4 weeks

    This course focuses on watershed systems and their influences on water movement and water quality. This includes the implications of agriculture and urbanization on water movement and quality within a watershed.

  4. 12–15 hours per week, for 4 weeks

    This course brings together the different aspects of the hydrologic cycle and introduces several common watershed modelling techniques for water resource management.

  5. 12–15 hours per week, for 4 weeks

    Water plays a critical role in our daily lives. This course is an introduction to human health at the individual and population level.

  6. 12–15 hours per week, for 4 weeks

    Humans are vast users of water. From large-scale agriculture to individual domestic use, water resources are being consumed at a tremendous rate. This course investigates the use of water by humans across the globe.

  7. 12–15 hours per week, for 4 weeks

    This course will investigate a number of solutions and interventions to water-related human health impacts.

  8. To earn the MicroMasters® Program certificate, learners must complete and successfully earn a verified certificate in all of the courses in this program.

    Completion of this MicroMasters® Program in Water and Global Human Health gives your 50% credit towards a full Graduate Diploma in Water and Human Health from Queen’s University. In turn, successfully obtaining the Graduate Diploma provides you advanced standing in one of four different masters degrees at Queen’s University: Collaborative Masters Program in Applied Sustainability, Masters in Engineering, Masters in Environmental Studies, Masters of Science.

    • Water affects everyone and as such is embedded in many career sectors.
    • These occupations have direct involvement in water quality, a key driver in global water-related human health: Watershed Officer, Aquatic Biologist, Agronomist, Soil Scientist, Forester, Hydrogeologist, Environmental Engineer and Water Resources Engineer.
    • The average salaries across the different disciplines vary greatly and they are also influenced by jurisdiction. For example, in Canada, the average salary for a Hydrogeologist is $74,100, while the average salary for a Watershed Officer is $63,485.
    • The average yearly growth in water industry jobs varies, however it is estimated that in the United States alone, 30-50% of the water sector workforce will retire in the next 10 years. Requiring continuous hiring in all water-related professions.

  • Certificates are issued by edX under the name of Queen’sX and are delivered online through edx.org.

  • You will receive an individual verified certificate for each course that you pass as a verified student. Students passing the final capstone exam and all six courses in the MicroMasters® Program in Water and Global Human Health on a verified track will receive a MicroMasters® Program certificate.

  • Yes. Course lengths are based on an average of 12 hours of effort per week per course. All courses are self-paced, meaning that if you wish to invest greater than 12 hours per week per course then you may finish sooner.

  • Yes. Take them in this order: 802a,b,c then 803a,b,c. It is recommended that you complete the 802 series before you begin the 803 series.

  • Having the MicroMasters program certificate provides the admissions committee at Queen’s University with confidence in a student’s capabilities. It is only in the rarest circumstances that this certificate is not sufficient to ensure admission into the online Graduate Diploma in Water and Human Health.

  • No. You will need to apply and be admitted to one of these on-campus Master’s programs. Successful completion of the two credentials above does give the admission committee confidence in your abilities, however.

  • You must achieve a grade of 73% or higher for a passing grade in each course and the capstone exam of the MicroMasters® program.

  • The final capstone exam will test your knowledge across all six courses in the MicroMasters® Program in Water and Global Human Health. It will be a virtually proctored timed exam and will feature problems similar to the graded assignments and quizzes found in the courses.

  • Water is a fundamental part of the human experience. Whether providing life through drinking water, entertainment through recreation or economic prosperity through industrial and commercial uses. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes water as essential for life (WHO, 2016). In order to properly protect water supplies against contamination and overuse, one must first understand the complex chemical, biological and hydrological interactions occurring within water in the environment and the policy and regulatory environment under which water exists. The MicroMasters® Program in Water and Global Human Health is intended for those that wish to further their career and secure jobs in the public health sector, engineering and environmental consulting, conservation authorities, non-profit organizations and government planning and management.

  • Almost anyone can. There are no official prerequisites. However, the majority of successful students will have an undergraduate degree in a related field and/or some work experience in the chemistry or environmental fields. Note that unfortunately, learners from one or more of the following countries or regions will not be able to register for this program: Iran, Cuba and the Crimea region of Ukraine. While edX has sought licenses from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to offer our courses to learners in these countries and regions, the licenses we have received are not broad enough to allow us to offer this program in all locations. EdX truly regrets that U.S. sanctions prevent us from offering all of our courses to everyone, no matter where they live.
