What is IBM Watson?

IBM Watson is currently one of the most famous examples of artificial intelligence. It uses machine learning and natural language processing to make decisions and interact with others in a humanlike way. This supercomputer is most well known for winning Jeopardy against human contestants, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Watson was initially created to be a question-answer machine, but now has applications as a chatbot in medical use cases. It applies advanced NLP, information retrieval, automated reasoning, and knowledge representation to open domain question answering processes. The bot is named after IBM founder and industrialist, Thomas J. Watson.

Learn about IBM Watson

Watson AI uses advanced principles of NLP and machine learning and uses cases have moved far beyond the quiz show. Now, the most significant use case resides in lung cancer treatment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The foundations of Watson AI are Apache UIMA and IBM's DeepQA. It uses a variety of information sources to process and learn what it needs to know to manage information and decisions. EdX.org offers courses in partnership with leaders in the field, teaching you not only about IBM Watson itself but also the underlying principles of the supercomputer. You can learn what you need to know from the privacy of your home, and many of the courses offer official certifications for professional purposes.

IBM Watson Courses and Certifications

IBM, the originator of Watson, offers a course designed to teach you everything you need to know about the supercomputer. You'll understand how the computer works, how it operates in real-life use cases like Watson Assistant, and the future of Watson Services. IBM follows up with a course on AI Applications using Watson. You'll learn how to apply Watson to your own projects, building applications with Watson APIs and understand how data sets will affect the result of your application. IBM also offers a professional certification series in Applied AI. Through this series, you'll understand AI applications, the underlying technology, use cases, and future applications of artificial intelligence, including a node to IBM's Watson.

Explore the Power of IBM Watson

The Watson supercomputer changed the way we think of machines, deep learning, and artificial intelligence. Now, with their ability to process things like patient data and provide advice for treatment options or even diagnosis, we may find ourselves on the cusp of true human/AI collaboration. The hype around AI may not always deliver. Still, our exploration into the world of computer intelligence could help us transform not only the medical field and cancer care, but also the financial services industry, customer service, and even our entertainment. It's a wide-open world for advancements in AI, and with edX, you could get your start in the field.
