Steps to become a pharmacy technician in Oregon

Here are some common steps to becoming a pharmacy technician in Oregon:

Step 1: Complete a pharmacy technician training program (optional)

You can become a pharmacy technician with a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED), so this step is optional. However, doing some sort of training before you start may give you an advantage when applying for jobs and will help prepare you for certification exams. You may feel more confident knowing you've already mastered some skills you'll need, and employers don't have to teach you the basics before you can begin.

These courses are often offered by community colleges and can take anywhere from 4 to 24 months to complete.

Step 2: Apply for registration with the Oregon State Board of Pharmacy

Before you start working as a pharmacy technician, you'll need to register with the Oregon Board of Pharmacy. This process includes submitting a completed application, passing a criminal background check, and paying the fees.

The requirements are pretty straightforward, so the important part is making sure you complete all the forms carefully and correctly.

Step 3: Obtain certification (optional)

Certification isn't necessary to work as a pharmacy technician in Oregon, but it is recommended and might help you build a successful career and potentially increase your chances of being hired sooner. There are two options to choose from:

  1. Apply for national certification with a recognized body like the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
  2. Apply for a Certified Oregon Pharmacy Technician License with the Oregon Board of Pharmacy
