Do you want your business or personal website to have exciting visuals? If so, you might hire an artist or graphic designer. However, doing so can cost a lot of time, money, and resources.
Knowing how to use Midjourney puts you in control and requires fewer resources, letting you create visuals aligned with your unique needs. You can learn how to use Midjourney in less than one day.
Explore how to get started with this exciting generative AI software in just four simple steps.
What is Midjourney?
Launched in 2022, Midjourney is an AI software suite that creates detailed images from simple text prompts. Midjourney can help people who are learning graphic design and businesses who want to streamline costs. Using Midjourney is also a great introduction to learning about AI's capabilities and potential.
Midjourney is not without controversy, as it needs to train on millions of copyrighted images to function. In 2024, a group of artists filed a lawsuit against Midjourney and other generative AI companies. The same year, people used the program to create false but lifelike propaganda of U.S. presidential candidates. Most recently, a U.S. court of appeals in Washington, D.C. ruled that AI-generated works do not qualify for copyright protections because they do not have a human creator.

3. Start generating images
Learning how to use Midjourney starts by experimenting with prompts. Review the following steps to help you make the most of each prompt.
- Use specific adjectives in your prompt. Doing so helps Midjourney understand your needs.
- If you want a specific amount of something in your image, don't forget to mention it. Otherwise, Midjourney will place a random number of objects/people/animals/etc.
- As you imagine your ideal image, focus on the details you want to stand out. Relate these details in your prompt by discussing the environment, mood, or color palette.
4. Refine your image prompts
Depending on your plan, you have 4-40 tries to edit your image. Fortunately, Midjourney offers a suite of tools that help you make big and small variations. You can also upscale, remix, and edit specific elements within your image.
These tools, similar to the ones found in traditional photo software, offer intuitive solutions for beginner and advanced users. You can also start from the beginning and submit a modified prompt. Practice can help you identify which tools and strategies best fit your needs.
