This course conveys geospatial remote sensing concepts starting with the basics of imaging and geospatial data. It introduces airborne remote sensing and provides an introduction to multispectral imagery. It discusses stereo-photogrammetry and summarizes advanced remote sensing methods such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and hyperspectral sensing.
Starting with the basics of imaging, we will discuss concepts and functionality of airborne remote sensing and provide an introduction to multispectral imagery and the electromagnetic spectrum. The course will also introduce visualization of 3D mapping on earth from images including stereo-photogrammetry and discuss earth observation, advanced remote sensing methods such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and hyperspectral sensing.
General proficiency in GIS
Basic proficiency in the concepts of Remote Sensing
Participants in this course will develop the following skills:
Week 1: The Concepts of Aerial Remote Sensing
Week one will introduce you to the main content and format of this course. The following items will be addressed:
Verified Track: Various exercises on measuring shape, size and height from single remote sensing data sets and aerial photography
Week 2: Multispectral Remote Sensing
Concepts of multispectral imaging including spectral reflectances and various multispectral composites:
Verified Track: Various interactive activities on composite creating and reflectance signatures
Week 3: 3D Mapping from images of the earth
This section focuses on the concepts of stereo-photogrammetry, including modern technologies such as structure-from-motion:
Verified Track: Assess height information derived using structure-from-motion processing and analyze their capabilities and limitations.
Week 4: Advanced Imaging Techniques – SAR & Hyperspectral Sensing
This part of the course introduced more advanced imaging concepts such as hyperspectral sensing and SAR:
Verified Track: Analyze data from advanced imaging techniques for Arctic applications
