Doctoral Researcher at Delft University of Technology
Major works, areas of expertise and/or research interests:
Rohan Varma graduated as an architect with first-class honours from the University of Mumbai and received his master's in architecture with honourable mention from the TU Delft as a Tata and Mahindra Scholar. He currently divides his time as the Principal Architect of VARMA Architects with his work at the TU Delft, where his research and teaching activities focus on affordable housing design in the rapidly urbanising cities of the Global South, particularly Mumbai. Varma regularly engages with both academic and public writing and has contributed papers and essays to a variety of publications, such as Learning from Mumbai (2013), DASH - Delft Architectural Studies on Housing (2015), and The Routledge Handbook on Informal Urbanization (2018). In 2018, he co-authored the book Living Ideals and co-curated an international travelling exhibition on the housing designs of the Indian architect and activist Charles Correa. More recently, in 2020, he was appointed as a Delft Global Fellow, and in 2023, he became a member of the editorial board of the book series DASH.
Rohan Varma is a member of the team that won the 2022 edX Prize for Exceptional Contributions in Online Teaching and Learning , for the online course Global Housing Design. The course, which focuses on the design of sustainable and inclusive housing, directly addresses the critical global need for urban development expertise, with close to a billion people worldwide currently living in inadequate housing.
