Prof. Rudi Westendorp is an internationally renowned physician, researcher and bestselling author. Together with David van Bodegom, he wrote ‘Oud worden in de praktijk' (A Guide to Growing Older) in which they discuss how to stay healthy, even when you get older. Professor of Medicine of Old Age at the Health and Medical Sciences Faculty of the University of Copenhagen. Knighthood in the order of the Dutch Lion (2014), Honorary Doctor of Medicine, Newcastle University, UK (2010), Member Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (2008), Member Health Research Council (2007). Rudi Westendorp studied at the University of Leiden, and became an internist at the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC). Initially in intensive care, later at the department of Geriatrics and Gerontology, which he headed for a long time. Since 2000 he has been professor of medicine. In 2008 he founded Leyden Academy on Vitality and Ageing. This knowledge centre provides education, conducts research and pursues innovations in the field of human ageing and vitality to advance the quality of life of older people. Rudi contributed to over 500 scientific publications, supervised over 40 PhD students in their successful promotion, and is extensively consulted and interviewed by media on his field of expertise.
