About me

Dr. Sara Copic is a researcher specializing in philosophy of language, large language models (LLMs), and AI ethics. In her work, Dr. Copic studies how humans understand language, how to compare the linguistic capabilities of LLMs with our own, and ethical concerns about AI in research and business applications. She has taught the first AI course in Davidson College’s Writing Program and has developed an AI Ethics for Professionals course in partnership with EdX in hopes of fostering more awareness about AI risks and responsible AI use by professionals from all backgrounds. As Assistant Director of the Deliberative Citizenship Initiative at Davidson College, Dr. Copic spearheaded the first public deliberative forum on AI and its social and economic risks and promises and has published an extensive public issue guide on the topic. She received her PhD in Philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she is an Affiliate Researcher with the UNC AI Project, a research group advancing research and collaboration on the philosophical foundations and significance of artificial intelligence and virtual worlds. Most recently, she has been a Venture Fellow with the Rogue Women’s Fund, scouting investment opportunities in women-led technology startups. Dr. Copic consults with investors and startups on responsible AI development and deployment. In her spare time, she runs a blog on new AI developments and AI Ethics called Gavagai.
