What is HTML5?

HTML5 is the latest version of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and describes the structure and presentation of web pages. HTML is one of the most commonly known coding languages among developers, and makes up the basis of the web. HTML5 was released as part of a series of updates designed to harness the potential of web page design.1

HTML5 revolutionized how websites look and function by introducing more possibilities for both users and web developers. This markup language was created to improve the overall web experience and give developers better flexibility when designing websites.2

The difference between HTML and HTML5 is that HTML5 is the most updated version of the old standard. With this new version of HTML, developers can create web applications that work offline and even support high-definition audio and video animations without the need for Flash or other plugins. It also makes code easier to read for users and reduces the overlap between HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

HTML5 elements include new APIs with various functionalities, including drag-and-drop support, browser history manipulation, and reading and locking screen orientation state. Unlike its previous versions, HTML5 is more mobile friendly and caters to tablets and smartphones alike, allowing end users the ability to access web pages at any time on any mobile device.3

HTML5 consists of multiple kinds of code across two versions: HTML 5.2 and the Living Standard. The 5.2 recommendation is from the World Wide Web Consortium (w3c) and is designed for web content developers. HTML5 Living Standard was designed for browser developers, and is maintained by the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG).4

HTML5 tutorial and course curriculum

If you’re interested in becoming a web developer, it is important to familiarize yourself with the most up-to-date programming and markup languages. HTML5 is the standard technology used to create digital ads and videos that can be viewed across multiple screens and browsers, so taking an HTML5 course is a great way to learn the skills used in a career as a web developer.

There are many online resources and courses available to introduce learners to HTML5 that can be completed in as short as a few weeks. Introductory courses are designed to help beginners gain confidence and knowledge by providing the building blocks of HTML5 coding. You can also learn HTML directly from w3c, with an entire front-end developer course designed to get you up and running quickly, or receive a professional certification in front-end development.

In introductory HTML5 tutorials, learners can gain hands-on experience with simplified HTML5 elements and audio and video elements. Then, learners can practice coding techniques with multiple interactive examples and test APIs, like web storage and geolocation. These courses are designed to provide learners with practical skills on how to create HTML5 files and develop web pages.

HTML5 developer jobs

HTML5 can be a required or recommended skill for various roles within web development, including UI developer, front-end engineer, HTML5 developer, software engineer, and web developer. With a background in HTML5, you are able to do many things online — from creating multimedia content to using flip effects — without relying on additional software. Because of that, it is possible that companies hiring for roles within web development may require this skill for HTML5 jobs.5

A basic understanding of HTML5 elements will help any aspiring web developer or designer. Companies hire web developers to create code for both the front and back end of a website, and to communicate with clients to determine their needs and overall design preferences. HTML5 developers and programmers are responsible for enhancing the functionality and quality of online and interactive material, using both HTML5 and CSS. They also deliver high-quality production, animation, and design to:

  • Create highly polished interactive experiences

  • Manage HTML projects

  • Build online apps

  • Code websites

  • Debug and troubleshoot any errors on a web page

Web developers and designers often work in computer systems design and related service industries.6 They may also work in publishing, management consulting, advertising, healthcare, government affairs, marketing, and other organizations across industries. Some web developers may also freelance, choosing which types of projects they take on, while working on several at a time.

How to become an HTML5 programmer online

Obtaining a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree in a field like computer science can provide learners with many HTML5 skills. If you do not have a degree, coding and analytical skills required for many roles can be obtained through other means. You can learn HTML5 through various online courses and coding boot camps from top institutions. It’s important to keep in mind that every job is different, and each company will likely have different hiring requirements.
