The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), the state’s historically black 1890 land-grant institution, has its purpose and uniqueness grounded in distinctive learning, discovery and engagement opportunities in the arts and sciences, education, technology, engineering, agriculture, business and health professions. We are a student-centered, doctoral research degree-granting university known for its nationally accredited undergraduate and graduate programs, applied research, and highly valued graduates. Our heritage as a historically black, public research institution that has grown into a 1,100-acre campus is balanced with our mission to serve a diverse student body representing nearly three dozen nations. UMES offers 60 degree programs and certificates, including those in agriculture, cybersecurity, education, hospitality and tourism management, pharmacy, physical therapy, and more. We provide today's college student ample opportunity to develop into a well-rounded individual capable of assuming leadership in society. UMES is one of twelve institutions that make up the University System of Maryland (USM). USM is the state of Maryland’s public higher education system, with a mission to improve the quality of life for the people of Maryland by providing a comprehensive range of high quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities. USM and its Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation has launched USMx to help institutions leverage the affordances of online learning, and give students the flexibility to interact with content, faculty, and learning communities in the ways that best meet their needs.
