Senior Curator of Flemish and Northern European Paintings at Museo del Prado de Madrid
Alejandro Vergara has taught at the Hispanic Studies Program at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He received his Ph.D. in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University in 1994. Prior to that he was a graduate from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, where he received a B.A. in Art History. He is currently Senior Curator of Flemish and Northern European Paintings at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. He has taught art history in the Department of Visual Arts, University of California, San Diego, and in the Department of Art History and Archeology, Columbia University, in New York. He is a specialist in seventeenth century Flemish painting, and has published extensively in that area. He has curated numerous exhibitions on the art of Peter Paul Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Vermeer, among other leading artists.
